I received my Avalon today and remembered the discussion with Olav 2-3 months ago about the sound I was looking for this finger picking guitar. The looks, sound and feel are exactly as I wished.
It is funny how Olav’s practice of naming the guitars buids up the expectation and helps to make it your own. I asked him to name the guitar after Missisippi John Hurt’s home town, Avalon, unknown small town in the middle of nowhere. Avalon, the guitar was built in the middle of nowhere in an old cow shed by the Master Luthier who hears first how the guitar should sound and then builds it .
MJHurt wrote the song ”Avalon” in the 20’s and was re-discovered 40 years later thanks to this song and became country blues legend. This was, of course the first song I played with Avalon.
”Avalon my home town, always on my mind, pretty women in Avalon want me there all the time”
Avalon looks slick and neat. I bet it sounds as sick as it looks. Congrats to the new owner!
The combination of D/OM is fantastic for the finger picking volume and the sound of Sapelli is as good as it gets .
Avalon looks really beautiful… Sapele seems to be a little bit underestimated as tonewood..?!?! 🙂
By the way.. OM/D means? A mix of dreadnought and OM? That would be a really interesting mixture…
I wish the owner lots of fun with this real gem….:)
